Talk Title: Immigration Policy and the State of Belonging: How Sub-federal Immigration Policies in Arizona and New Mexico Shape Belonging

Abstract: Using a combination of survey, experiment, and in-depth interview data, we show how variation in state-level immigration policies in Arizona (an unwelcoming state) and New Mexico (a welcoming state) shape whether whites and Latinos feel like they belong in their state, and how they make sense of their belonging. Our data indicate that the effects of these polices are widespread, and reveal an often unspoken consensus about how policy makers should deal with immigration.
