Program Fees

In 2014, we initiated a series of new programs and facilities within the School of Sociology to aid Sociology and Care, Health and Society majors. A small program fee of $300 per semester for juniors and seniors in the major will be spent on the undergraduate program and is subject to strict accounting procedures and regulation of the University of Arizona and the Arizona Board of Regents.

We are very excited about being able to offer our undergraduates new student enrichment programs that will translate into higher paying job programs for our students.

Student Advising

Care, Health & Society (CHS) and Sociology majors receive specific and specialized advising tailored to the specific needs of each student. In 2014, we moved advising from Douglass to the Social Science Building and John McNeill, our Senior Academic Advisor works full time in the School of Sociology to advise students to help select courses to fit their needs. Improved communication between advising, the Director of Undergraduate Studies and CHS Program Director, and full-time commitment to both programs greatly facilitates direct progress to degree completion and helps students to better prepare for graduation and today’s job market.

Mentoring and Tutoring Services

A graduate assistant is available to mentor and tutor School of Sociology majors in core courses that are required for graduation, specifically in Introduction to Statistics (SBS 200), Quantitative Reasoning in Sociology (SOC 375), and Social Research Methods (SOC 374).

Expanded Internship Opportunities

The Internship Coordinator oversees the coordination of career related internships for Sociology and Care, Health & Society students in their Junior or Senior year. Internships will ease the transition from the university to job market and finding meaningful careers.

Professional Skill Development and Career Networking

The School of Sociology also provides networking opportunities:

  • For Sociology majors: with Sociology graduates on how their sociology degree helped them achieve their career goals, whether that be direct employment or graduate school.
  • For CHS majors: with professionals from the healthcare field on how the CHS degree can achieve their career goals, whether that be direct employment or graduate school

Additional Courses Taught by Experts in the Field (CHS)

Practitioners with experience in health-related fields teach short-term or semester-long CHS courses in areas related to the general field of healthcare that can be applied to the healthcare industry that will benefit CHS majors’ post-graduation employment.

Scholarships

We reserve 14 percent of the fees for scholarships to “allow access for qualified students who cannot afford the fee” as stated by the Arizona Board of Regents policies. We also offer other scholarships to qualified juniors and seniors, such as textbook support for fall and spring semesters and travel funding for conferences if the student is presenting their research.

Advisory Board

Every fall semester the School of Sociology puts out a call for students in their Junior and Senior year, to apply to be part of the Student Governance Board. The Student Governance Board represents student constituencies and offers recommendations on the use of program fees.s.
