Research and Independent Study

You can gain practical experience and earn academic credit through three types of Practicums. See details below:

Work with your project advisor to fill out the form, then return to John McNeill. You will then be enrolled in the appropriate course.

Research Assistant

The specific research experiences vary depending on the projects and stages of the projects that faculty and graduate students are working on.

You can sign up for anywhere from 1-6 academic credits (1 credit equals about 45 hrs.). No more than 6 credits of Practicum can be applied toward the sociology major.

 

Independent Study

You can pursue an Independent Study to explore a specific sociological topic of interest under the guidance of a faculty member while earning academic credit.

The focus and scope of your Independent Study will be determined in collaboration with your faculty mentor, allowing for a tailored academic experience that aligns with your interests and goals.

You can enroll for 1-6 academic credits (1 credit equals approximately 45 hours of work). No more than 6 credits of Independent Study can be applied toward the sociology major.

 

Honors Thesis

You can complete an Honors Thesis to conduct in-depth, independent research on a sociological topic of your choice under the mentorship of a faculty advisor. This experience allows you to develop and execute a significant research project while earning academic credit. You can enroll for 3-6 academic credits across two semesters. No more than 6 credits of Honors Thesis can be applied toward the sociology major.
