Talk Title: "Don’t Rock the Boat? Investigating Barriers to Asian American Political Participation Through Interviews in L.A."

Abstract: Asian Americans, despite their relative economic and educational success, lag behind other racial groups in their levels of political participation. This study seeks to uncover new explanations for this disparity through interviews with Japanese, Chinese, and Indian American residents of the greater L.A. area. Findings suggest that formal participation is a product of both learned orientations towards the public sphere in the sending country and the relative isolation most experience in their new home. The predominant theories of political participation should therefore be expanded beyond a limited range of resources relevant for natives to account for the unique positions of immigrants.
