Dr. Justin Strong is an assistant professor of practice in the School of Sociology at the University of Arizona. His work critically interrogates the intersection of punishment and social suffering with special focus given to the legal status and rights of incarcerated people. Dr. Strong’s current research project draws upon the organized failure of state and legal institutions to redress harm within prisons to think about broader social arrangements of abandonment, indifference, and brutality. Dr. Strong is also involved in collaborative research projects that span other critical issues related to incarceration. He is co-PI on a study evaluating reforms to solitary confinement practices in the state of Washington. As part of another study, Dr. Strong and his colleagues examine national trends, patterns, and reporting issues in prisoner mortality and morbidity data.
Dr. Strong received his PhD in criminology, law and society from the University of California, Irvine. He holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminology from Northern Arizona University. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Dr. Strong was an assistant professor at San José State University.
