Dr. Mohana Mukherjee’s research sits at the intersection of digital sociology, cyber-criminology, and restorative justice, with a focus on how technology is reshaping youth conflict, identity, and institutional responses to harm. Her work explores online behaviors such as cyberbullying, digital aggression, and Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA), particularly within K–12 school contexts across Canada and the United States. Her scholarship critically examines how emerging technologies—algorithms, artificial intelligence, and surveillance infrastructures—reshape the nature of online interaction and identity performance, especially as social contexts blur in what is known as “context collapse.” Mukherjee’s research interrogates how evolving social contexts—often obscured or transformed by technological mediation, are considered (or overlooked) in the development of policies and laws addressing cyber-harms, and she advocates for school-based interventions grounded in restorative justice practices. A dedicated educator, Dr. Mukherjee brings a global perspective to the classroom, having taught in India, Canada, and the United States. Her teaching philosophy centers on restorative dialogue and participatory learning.
Dr. Mukherjee earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Calgary in 2023, an M.A. and B.A. in Sociology from the University of Calcutta, where she was awarded two gold medals and national fellowships for academic excellence. Before joining the University of Arizona, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at George Washington University.
Beyond academia, she enjoys manga, growing plants, reading widely, and curating teas from around the world.
