"Is The United States still The Land of Opportunity?"
Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Poverty & Inequality, the California Welfare Laboratory, and Recession Trends
How much social mobility is there in the United States? Although there has been much speculation that opportunities for mobility are now very limited, the evidence upon which such speculation has been based has various inadequacies that have not always been fully appreciated. We provide new evidence based on survey and administrative data that suggests that the amount of intergenerational persistence in the United States is indeed very limited.
